1940s Vintage Old Tom Gin One Liter Bottle AFRIKA KORPS WW II with Tom Cat on label! In the early part of WW II Field Marshall Rommel and his Afrika Korps huge oak casks of liquors were collected as spoils of war from North Africa and transferred to Italy. After the USA VI Corps of the Fifth Army took control in Italy and the liquor cache was discovered, the Delva Distillery was commissioned to bottle the liquor. Local glassmakers were enlisted to produce the necessary bottles. After the 1945 Allied victory in Europe, the bottled liquor was transferred to Austria where it slept for another 30 years before the legal owners of the remaining supply approached USAREUR-AF (US Army Europe and Africa) to resell it. The reproduction label was added for resale in Army Air Force Exchange stores (AAFES). The label was designed to slip over the bottle, so we were able to photograph what remains of the original 1940s Delva Distillery label on the bottle. The reproduction label has tears around the upper and lower edges as seen in the photos but the label it complete. Bottle interior is clean. Original glass bottle seams are rough in places and there are air bubbles throughout the glass, but there are no chips or cracks. There are light reflections on the bottle glass in the photos. Bottle is empty. It measures 12 1/4″ high and the base diameter is 3 1/2″. A historical information booklet was produced for the AAFES inventory. The booklet with the green cord is original to this bottle and we are including three additional booklets with this lot. One of the extra booklets has a liquor stain on the back cover.
